January 4, 2010 (week 16)

AP Physics 12 - Welcome back to school. This week we will finish up our studies of Simple Harmonic Motion. Then we will get started with chapter 7 Momentum. Reminder of the AP Exam scheduled for January 14.

Physics 11 - Welcome back to school. We are starting chapter 9 Momentum.

Science 10 - Welcome back to school. This week we begin chapter 4 Atomic Structure.

Math 9 - Welcome back to school. We are mid-way through chapter 2 and our first lesson is chapter 2.6 Solving Equations.

December 14, 2009 (week 15)

AP Physics 12 - This week we will study Simple Harmonic Motion (SHM). Reminder of the practice AP Exam on January 7, 2010.

Physics 11 - Reminder of the test this week covering Universal Gravitation and Projectile Motion in 2-dimensions. Test on December 17. We will do a few problems in chapter 6 Vectors and students must complete the problems assigned in class from sections 6.1 and 6.2.

Science 10 - We will see the rest of the Ecology presentations this week. Students must complete workbook chapter 3 in preparation for the test on December 18. In the new year we will be starting chapter 4 Chemistry.

Math 9 - We will continue to work in chapter 2 this week. Students must complete all of the practice problems in each section in preparation for the chapter 2 test at the end of January.

December 7, 2009 (week 14)

AP Physics 12 - This week we will get started with chapter 6 Work, Energy, Power.

Physics 11 - This week we will spend one lesson learning about Isaac Newton's Law of Universal Gravitation. Then we'll do a couple of lessons on kinematics in 2-dimensions (projectile motion). Our next topic will be chapter 6 Vectors.

Science 10 - This week we will have our Ecosystem project presentations and we'll also finish reading chapter 3. Students should be completing the workbook at their own pace in preparation for the chapter 3 test on December 16.

Math 9 - We are starting chapter 2 Equations. Students must complete the practice problems in each section of the chapter.

November 30, 2009 (week 13)

AP Physics - We will wrap up chapter 5 Centripetal Force this week. Students must complete a minimum of 25 problems from both chapters 4 and 5 in preparation for the chapter 4/5 test on December 2.


Physics 11 - We will wrap up chapter 5 Dynamics this week. Students must complete a minimum of 25 practice problems in preparation for the chapter 5 test on December 2.


Science 10 - We are currently studying chapter 3 Ecosystems Continually Change. Students must select a presentation project topic and get started researching information for their presentations that begin on December 7. Also, students should be completing workbook chapter 3 at their own pace in preparation for the chapter 3 test mid-December.

Math 9 - This week we will get started with Chapter 2 Algebra.

Tuesday, November 24, 2009 (week 12)

AP Physics 12 - We have started chapter 5 Centripetal Acceleration and Force. This week we will do a lab and try to finish up the notes for chapter 5, in preparation for the chapter 4/5 test at the end of November.


Physics 11 - We will do a few more activities related to chapter 5 Forces. Students should complete all of the practice problems and end of chapter review problems in preparation for the chapter 5 test at the end of November.


Science 10 - We have started chapter 3 Ecosystems Are Continually Changing and students should be working on the workbook at their own pace.


Math 9 - Ms. Smolar (SFU) will be finishing up chapter 7 this week and students should complete all of the practice problems in preparation for the chapter 7 test on November 26.

November 16, 2009 (week 11)

AP Physics 12 - We will get started with chapter 5 Centripetal Force. Students must complete at least 25 problems from each chapter in preparation for the upcoming chapter 4/5 Test later this month.


Physics 11 - We have started working on Chapter 5 Dynamics which is the study of forces. Students should complete all of the practice problems in the textbook in addition to the numerous lab activities that we will be doing related to forces.


Science 10 - Students should complete all of workbook chapter 2 at their own pace in preparation for the chapter 2 test on November 16. This week we will get started with chapter 3 entitled Ecosystems Continually Change.


Math 9 - We have started chapter 7 Shape and Space. This is a very practical chapter related to finding the surface area and volume of regular shaped objects.

AP Physics 12 - We will complete chapter 4 dynamics this week. Students must complete at least 25 problems in preparation for the upcoming chapter 4/5 Test in December. Later this week we will get started with chapter 5 Centripetal Force.

Physics 11 - Reminder that students must complete all of the chapter 4 practice problems (and more) in preparation for the chapter 4 test on November 9. We have started working on Chapter 5 Dynamics which is the study of forces.

Science 10 - We will finish chapter 2.3 this week. Students should complete all of workbook chapter 2 at their own pace in preparation for the chapter 2 test next week.

October 26, 2009 (weeek 8)

AP Physics 12 - This week we will continue to study chapter 4 Dynamics. Students should be working on the end of chapter review problems.

Physics 11 - This week we will do a lab to determine the acceleration due to earth's gravity. We are just about finished with chapter 4 Accelerated Motion. Students must complete at least 25 textbook problems in preparation for the chapter 4 test next week.

Science 10 - This week we will learn about nutrient cycles in chapter 2. Please continue to work at your own pace of workbook chapter 2.

Math 9 - We will continue to learn about measurements related to triangles. Students must complete the practice problems in each section of chapter 6.

October 19, 2009 (week 7)

AP Physics 12 - Reminder of the chapter 2/3 re-tests on October 20 and also the Quantum physics test on Oct 22. We have started chapter 4 Dynamics. Please look over the example problems in your textbook and start working on the end of chapter review problems.

Physics 11 - Reminder of the chapter 3 re-test on October 21. We are currently studying chapter 4 Accelerated Motion. Please look over the example problems and complete all of the practice problems.

Science 10 - We are off to a great start this year. The chapter 1 test results were very good! Ms. Smolar is now planning the lessons for chapter 2 on Food Webs and students should be completing the workbook at their own pace.

Math 9 - We are now studying chapter 6 Measurement (triangles and trigonometry). Students should complete the practice problems in each section of this chapter. Reminder of the chapter one re-test on October 21.

Tuesday, October 13, 2009 (week 6)

AP Physics 12 - This week we will get started with chapter 4 Dynamics which is the study of forces that produce motion and acceleration. Students should look at the example problems in the text and complete the end of chapter review problems (odd numbers). Reminder of the chapter 3 and 4 re-tests on October 20 and also the Quantum Physics test on October 22.

Physics 11 - This week we will continue to study chapter 4 Accelerated Motion. Students should look over the example problems in the textbook and complete the Practice Problems in chapter 4. Reminder of the chapter 3 Motion re-test on October 21.

Science 10 - Reminder of the Chapter 1 Biomes test on October 14. In preparation for the test students must complete all of workbook chapter 1 or the Chapter Notes Worksheets.

Math 9 - Reminder of the chapter 1 test on October 13. This week we will jump ahead to chapter 6 and our lessons will be prepared by SFU student teacher Ms. Smolar.

October 5, 2009 (week 5)

AP Physics 12 - Reminder of the test covering chapters 2 & 3 on October 5th. Here is a checklist of things students need to do in preparation for the test.
  • Look over all the example problems in this chapter
  • Finish the sample test questions from the testbank
  • Complete the odd numbered end of chapter Review Problems.
  • Try some questions from old provincial exams
  • Must submit a minimum of 25 problems from the textbook and/or provincial exams. These are due at start of class on the test date.
  • Attend or assist with peer-tutoring in room E202 on Collabortion days starting in October.
  • Visit Mr. Fuerderer's Homework Site for practice exams, solutions, etc.

September 28, 2009 (week 4)

AP Physics 12 - This week we will finish up chapter 3 projectile motion. Students must complete a minimum of 50 problems in preparation for the Chapter 2/3 test on October 5. We will continue our studies in Quantum Physics which is the physics of the atom and it's energy levels.

Physics 11 - This week we will continue to study motion graphs. Students should complete all of the practice problems in chapter 3 in preparation for the chapter 3 test on October 8.

Here is a checklist of things students need to do in preparation for the test.

  • Look over all the example problems in this chapter
  • Finish the sample test questions from testbank
  • Complete most of the Practice problems in this chapter
  • Try some of the end of chapter Review Problems
    Must submit a minimum of 25 problems from the textbook, chosen from Practice and/or Review problems. These are due at start of class on the test date.

Science 10 - Students must choose their ecology project topic this week. We will try to finish with chapter 1 this week and students must complete all of workbook chapter 1 in preparation for the chapter 1 test on October 14.

Math 9 - This week we will continue our studies in chapter 1 and learn about the exponent rules and solving problems that involve exponents. Students must complete all of the practice problems in each section of chapter 1.

September 21, 2009 (week 3)

AP Physics 12 - We have started to study projectile motion in 2 dimensions, chapter 3. Students should read their textbook and look over the example problems in chapter 3. We have also started Quantum physics which is the study of the atom and atomic energy levels.

Physics 11 - This week we will complete chapter 3 and spend more time looking at motion graphs. Students should complete all of the practice problems in chapter 3. They should also look at the end of chapter Review Problems for extra practice.

Science 10 - This week students will choose the topic for their Ecology Project. We will continue to learn about biomes, ecosystems and habitats in chapter 1. We will spend much time this week examining climatographs.

Math 9 - This week we will continue with sections 1.3, 1.4 and 1.5. Students must complete the practice problems in each section. Students are required to show their workings and many are finding it difficult. It is not sufficient to plug numbers into your calculator and write down the final answer. You must show some of the intermediate steps...the workings that led you to your answer.

September 14, 2009 (week 2)

AP Physics 12 - We will complete our review of chapter 2 Kinematics in 1-dimension, and get started on chapter 3 Kinematics in 2-dimensions (projectile motion). Students should complete the odd numbered practice problems at the end of chapter in addition to old exam questions.

Physics 11 - This week we will learn how to depict motion on graphs (displacement, velocity, and acceleration graphs). Students should complete all of the practice problems in chapter 3 as well as the end of chapter 3 Review Problems.

Science 10 - We are starting Chapter 1 Ecosystems. Reminder that students can purchase the optional workbooks for $8 and they are meant to be highlighted and written in...highly recommended.

Math 9 - We have begun chapter 1 Numbers and are starting to work with squares and square roots. Students should attempt all of the practice problems in each section of chapter 1.

Tuesday, September 8, 2009 (week 1)

Welcome back to school everyone. Those of you in science 9 and science 10 are invited to participate in the 2010 Easter Adventure to Orlando Florida. Please see me for more details.

AP Physics 12 - We begin with a quick review of chapters 2 & 3 kinematics equations and graphs, as well as projectile motion in 2-dimensions. We will also study some Quantum Physics (Photons, Bohr's atomic model, Photoelectric effect, and more).

Physics 11 - We begin with chapters 3 & 4 Motion and continue from where you left off in Science 10 Motion Unit.

Science 10 - We are starting with chapter 1 Biomes and Ecosystems. Students will have to complete a project on biomes and they should choose their topic right away.

Math 9 - We will begin with Chapter 1 Numbers. Students should complete the practice questions in each section of every chapter (we study the entire book over the course of the year). Students are minimally meeting expectations when they complete the first half of the practice problems. They fully meet expectations or exceed expectations when they can also solve the Problems and Applications in each section.

June 15, 2009 (week 39)

This week I am in Fort Collins, Colorado grading Advanced Placement Physics exams. I am joined by 140 physics professors and instructors from across North America. Our task is to grade over 100 000 exams in 7 days, yikes! I have been involved with this for the past decade and it is always a terrific professional development experience.

I will be returning to Burnaby South on Monday June 22. Good luck to everyone on their provincial exams.

May 25, 2009 (week 36)

AP Physics 12 - Here is the schedule for the remainder of this course:

  • Chapter 20 test on May 26
  • Lab on e-m induction followed by the chapter 21/22 test on June 3.
  • In-class final exam on June 9.

Physics 12 - We have begun our final chapter 22 on Electromagnetic Induction. Here are the remaining tasks.
  • Chapter 21 problems are due May 29.
  • Chapter 22 problems are due June 2.
  • Test on chapters 21/22 on June 2.
  • Lastly, we will write the in-class Final Exam on June 8.


Physics 11 - This week we will finish chapter 18 Optics. Students will work on chapter 18 problems as well as their Nuclear Fission and Fusion assignment which is due June 8. The chapter 18 test will be on June 2, and the final exam will be written on June 8.

Science 8 - Reminder of the chapter 10 test on May 29. This week we begin chapter 11 Oceans.

AP Physics 12 - Good luck to everyone on their AP Exams. We will suspend our class for a few weeks until all of your AP exams are out of the way. Here is the schedule for the remainder of the year:
*We will resume class on May 20.
*Lab on DC Circuits followed by the Chapter 20 test on May 26.
*Lab on e-m induction in solenoids followed by Chapter 21/22 Test on June 3.
*In-class final examination worth 10% of overall mark on June 9.

Physics 12 - We have just about completed chapter 21 Magnetism and students should complete at least 25 practice problems in preparation for the test in a few weeks.

Physics 11 - This week we are starting chapter 18 Optics. Please bring a compass and protractor to class if you have them.

Science 8 - We have started chapter 10 Water Cycle on Earth. Students must complete the Check Your Understanding questions at the end of each section.

Math 9 - We have completed chapter 81 - 8.5 Transformations. Students can choose to complete a project or write a test. The project is due May 22, the test will be on May 26.

May 11, 2009 (week 34)

Science 8 - We will dissect a cows eye this week and will have a short quiz on human vision later in the week. Next week we begin the final unit on Water Systems.

Math 9 - We have just about completed chapter 8 Transformations. Students must complete the practice problems in each section of chapter 8. We will have a test or project next week.

We have started chapter 17 and are working on labs related to reflection and refraction. Students must complete a minimum of 25 problems in preparation for the chapter 17 test on May 14.

Science 8 - Students must complete all of workbook chapter 5 in preparation for the chapter 5 Optics Test on May 5. We will spend a few classes on human vision and the cow's eyeball dissection will take place on Thursday May 7.

Math 9 - We have begun chapter 8 Transformations. Students must complete the practice problems in each section of chapter 8.

AP Physics 12 - We will complete chapter 22 Electromagnetic Induction this week and spend the final few classes reviewing and preparing for the AP Exam in May.

Physics 12 - Reminder of the chapter 18/19 re-test on May 1. We will complete chapter 20 DC Circuits this week. Students must complete a minimum of 25 practice problems in preparation for the chapter 20 test on May 11.

Physics 11 - Reminder to chapter 14 review problems are due May 4 (minimum of 25 problems). This week we will get started with chapter 17 Reflection and Refraction of Waves. We will do several activities with the optics kit, and students must complete all of the practice problems in chapter 17 in preparation for the test in a few weeks.

Science 8 - We will complete chapter 5 Optics this week. We will do a few activities related to light passing through concave and convex lenses. Students should complete all of workbook chapter 5 in preparation for the chapter 5 test on May 5.

Math 9 - Reminder of the chapter 5 Polynomials test on April 28. This week we will get started with chapter 8.

Math 9 - Reminder of the chapter 4 re-test on Monday April 20 (students must have completed all of the odd/even practice problems in each section of chapter 4 in order to qualify to do the re-write). Students must also complete all of the practice problems in chapter 5 in preparation for the chapter 5 test on April 28.

AP Physics 12 - We will finish chapter 20 DC Circuits and get started with chapter 21 Magnetism. Reminder to download some recent practice exams from AP Central Website. Also, my homework site has plenty of practice problems with solutions.

Physics 12 - Reminder of the Chapter 18/19 Test on April 17. This week we will get started on chapter 20 DC Circuits.

Physics 11 - We are starting Chapter 14 Waves. Students should complete all of the practice problems and end of chapter review problems in preparation for the test in a few weeks.

Science 8 - Reminder of the chapter 4 Light Waves test on April 17. We are starting chapter 5 Optics. This is a fun chapter with plenty of hands-on activities to explore reflection and refraction of light using mirrors and lenses.

Math 9 - We will try to complete chapter 5 Polynomials this week and tentatively have the chapter 5 test scheduled for the end of next week.

AP Physics 12 - We will postpone all big tests (ch 18,19,20,21,22) until after the AP exams in May. Meanwhile we are in a race to finish the last few chapters by the end of April This week we will complete chapter 20 DC Circuits. AP Physics 12 - This week we will learn about Electric Fields and how they can exert forces on charged particles. We will complete chapter 18 before we leave for Spring Break and when we return from vacation we will get started with chapter 19 Electric Potential.

Physics 12 - Same as AP Physics 12

Physics 11 - We are starting chapter 12 Thermal Energy and will do a few interesting labs related to heat energy and the efficiency of heating devices.

Science 8 - We are starting chapter 4 Waves. Students will learn some wave terminology including wavelength, frequency, crest, trough, and amplitude. Students should complete workbook chapter 4 at their own pace in preparation for the test in a few weeks.

Math 9 - We continue our studies in chapter 4 Polynomials. Students must complete the practice problems in each section of chapter 4. Reminder of the chapter 3 Equations re-test on March 12.

March 2, 2009 (week 25)

AP Physics 12 - We will learn to use Bernoulli's equation to solve problems involving fluids in motion. We will also get started with chapter 18 Electrostatics where we will learn how to use Coulomb's Law to calculate the electrostatic force between 2 or more charged particles.

Science 8 - We are starting chapter 3 Immune System. Students should complete workbook chapter 3 at their own pace in preparation for the Chapter 3 test on March 13.

Math 9 - Reminder of the chapter 3 test on March 2. This week we begin chapter 4 Polynomials. Students should complete the practice problems in each section of chapter 4.

February 23, 2009 (week 24)

AP Physics 12 -This week we will learn how to calculate fluid flow rate and the equation of continuity. Reminder of the term 2 exam on February 26.

Physics 11 - Chapter 10/11 test on February 23 and the term 2 test on Feb 26

Science 8 - This week we will finish chapter 2.3 Respiration. Students should complete all of their workbook chapter 2 in preparation for the chapter 2 test on February 27.

Math 9 - This week we will finish chapter 3 and spend one or two periods reviewing for the chapter 3 test on March 2.

AP Physics 12 - The air table lab is due Jan 26 and we will do a variety of practice problems in preparation for the chapter 6/7 test on Jan 30 (Work, Energy, Momentum).

Physics 11 - We will do a variety of practice problems in preparation for the chapter 9 Momentum test on Jan 30.

Science 8 - Students should complete all of workbook chapter 1 in preparation for the chapter 1 test on Jan 29.

Math 9 - I am picking up Mr Lee's Math 9 so welcome to my new students! We will write the chapter 2 test on Jan 28. Then we will get started with chapter 3 Using Equations to Solve Problems.

January 12, 2009 (week 18)

AP Physics 12 - We will continue to study Chapter 7 Momentum. This week we will focus on problems involding the conservations of momentum in 2-dimensions. Students must complete a minimum of 25 problems in preparation for the chapter 7 test on January 22. Reminder to check the Burnaby South homework site for solutions to all practice problems.

Physics 12 - Same as AP Physics 12 above.

Physics 11 - We have started Chapter 9 Momentum. Students should look at the example problems and complete all of the textbook practice problems in preparation for the chapter 9 test, date TBA. Please check the Burnaby South Homework site for additional worksheets and practice.

Science 8 - This week we will finish chapter 1.3 We will learn about diffusion and osmosis and how these processes are important to cells. We will also spend two periods in the computer lab learning how to use software called PhotoStory3 which allows students to create interesting slide shows with text and audio.
